Monisha CHEONG is a Partner in the Commercial & Corporate Disputes Practice. Monisha has an active disputes practice and regularly appears before all levels of the Singapore Courts, international arbitral tribunals under various rules and in statutory adjudications. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and French and has represented clients in a wide range of complex, high-value and cross-border matters involving the private equity, construction, cryptocurrency, property, hospitality, renewable energy, automobile, natural resources and healthcare industries. Monisha is presently serving her second term as a member of both the YSIAC Committee as well as the Law Society of Singapore’s Building and Construction Law Committee. In addition to her counsel and advisory work, Monisha also sits as arbitrator.

Significant transactions / matters that Monisha has been involved in include advising/ acting for the following:

  • The Investor in Singapore International Commercial Court proceedings in connection with an arbitration commenced pursuant to the 2011 India – Japan Economic Partnership Agreement involving a US$660 million claim relating to the automobiles sector.
  • Singapore counsel for various ultra-high net worth individuals in mutual legal assistance proceedings, proceedings before supranational bodies, arbitrations commenced pursuant to bilateral investment treaties, domestic criminal proceedings, and foreign criminal proceedings in relation to assets worth more than US$3 billion.
  • A regional architecture practice in Singapore court proceedings involving a US$65 million claim relating to the contract administration for a high-end residential project.
  • A global insurance conglomerate in arbitration proceedings involving a US$25 million claim against a Southeast Asian bank arising out of various long-term distribution agreements.
  • A Chinese state-owned manufacturing company in arbitration proceedings involving a US$170 million claim against an Indonesian utilities company relating to the construction of a coal-fired electricity and steam-generating power plant in Indonesia.
  • The liquidator in relation to arbitration proceedings against a Caribbean company involving a US$46 million claim for assets in China.
