The European Union Artificial Intelligence Act (Act), which came into force on 1 August 2024, represents the world’s first comprehensive regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The Act establishes a uniform legal framework for the development, marketing and use of AI within the European Union (EU).

While the Act primarily targets AI activities within the EU, its extraterritorial scope means that businesses based outside the EU, including those in Singapore, may also fall within its ambit if their AI systems or outputs are placed or used within the EU. This broad application underscores the importance of global compliance efforts, especially for entities operating in AI-heavy sectors.

This update outlines the key features of the Act and its extraterritorial reach.
