We congratulate our Senior Consultant, Simon Tay, on being conferred the President’s Award for the Environment (PAE) by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam — the highest environmental accolade in Singapore, awarded biennially to individuals, organisations and educational institutions that have made outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and resilience.

Simon was recognised for his longstanding leadership in environmental sustainability. As Chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA), he has played a pivotal role in shaping national and regional conversations, as well as fostering private-public collaboration on environmental issues.

In 1998, as a Nominated Member of Parliament and environmental lawyer, Simon initiated the first parliamentary motion on transboundary haze and in the same year, chaired the inaugural regional dialogue on the cross-border crisis with Indonesian and Malaysian experts and NGOs. Simon was also the Chair of the National Environment Agency of Singapore from 2002 to 2008, and led several public consultations, including Singapore 21 and the Singapore Green Plan 2012.

He has also served as global advisory boards for Toyota and MUFG and corporate advisor to Temasek. Simon is also an associate professor of law, teaching environmental law at the National University of Singapore, and has taught at Harvard Law School, Yale University, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.
