WongPartnership is the only Singapore firm recognised in the Global Arbitration Review's List of Top 35 firms globally

20 Apr 2022

SINGAPORE, 20 APRIL 2022 – WongPartnership is the only regional law firm headquartered in Singapore to be recognised among the top 35 firms globally in the annual rankings of the world’s leading international arbitration practices recently released by the Global Arbitration Review (GAR). This is not the first time that the firm has ranked amongst top arbitration firms globally. Having first appeared in GAR’s rankings in 2011, WongPartnership's over 60-strong International Arbitration Practice, which includes amongst the highest number of Senior Counsel amongst Singapore law firms, continues to be one of the largest in the region, with capabilities in commercial and investment arbitrations seated anywhere in the world and under all major arbitration rules.

Said Chou Sean Yu, Head of WongPartnership’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution Group, “We are delighted to be continually recognised by the Global Arbitration Review as one of the top international arbitration firms globally all these years. I am immensely proud of our arbitration lawyers. This recognition is testament to the deep expertise we have in the team and the lawyers' hard work, dedication and commitment.”

"This recognition is a timely reminder of our journey as a firm as we celebrate our 30th anniversary this year. The foundation of our success has always been anchored upon excellence and our shared values where we seek to collaborate, innovate and constantly break new ground. These have guided us in our early days and will continue to underpin our success for the future," added Alvin Yeo, Senior Counsel, Chairman & Senior Partner of WongPartnership.

Having already built a solid track record in international commercial arbitrations, WongPartnership was the first Singapore law firm to appear as the sole counsel in an ICSID arbitration in representing the government of Papua New Guinea in 2014. Since then, we have continued to be involved in significant investment arbitrations, including acting for Macau-based Sanum Investments and Netherlands-based Lao Holdings in highly publicised Court proceedings related to bilateral investment treaty arbitration claims in excess of US$1 billion against the Government of Laos arising from the misappropriation of gaming investments; the Republic of India in an application before a three-member panel of the Singapore International Commercial Court to challenge the arbitral tribunal’s decision on jurisdiction in an investor-state arbitration brought by Nissan against India under the 2011 Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement entered into between Japan and India; our involvement in a setting aside application of an investor-state arbitral award concerning claims of over US$1.9 billion against the Kingdom of Lesotho, amongst others.

GAR’s annual survey of specialist arbitration firms worldwide offers qualitative analysis of arbitration practices around the world. Firms are researched and assessed to ensure that only the elite are listed, and firms are ranked based on the number of arbitral hearings, high-value disputes and for activities that reflect a strong reputation in international commercial arbitration.
