WongPartnership receives top plaudits at Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific Awards

27 May 2021

Singapore, 27 May 2021 – We are pleased to announce that WongPartnership has been named “International Arbitration Firm of the Year” at the 2021 Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific Awards. In addition, Alvin Yeo, Senior Counsel, Chairman and Senior Partner of WongPartnership, has been recognised as “Singapore Lawyer of the Year” and “International Arbitration Lawyer of the Year” at the same Awards.

The Awards by Euromoney Legal Media Group celebrate the leading litigators and law firms and showcases the most impactful disputes across Asia-Pacific. The result is the culmination of months of research, analysing hundreds of submissions and surveying thousands of referees and hundreds of lawyers. Winners are judged on innovation, complexity and impact.

Said WongPartnership’s Managing Partner, Ng Wai King, “We are extremely proud of the prominence and expertise of our Litigation and Dispute Resolution (LDR) team as a whole and of Alvin in particular. This is an outstanding achievement that recognises the hard work and accomplishment of our LDR lawyers. Alvin’s legal skills and the depth of capability in our Firm often speak for themselves but this win is wonderful icing on the cake. I am certain that my LDR colleagues will not be resting on their laurels; we have a team of lawyers who are highly motivated and driven to act in the best interest of clients.”

A luminary in his field, Alvin was appointed Senior Counsel of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 2000 at the age of 37, the youngest ever to be appointed. He was also honoured with the “Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession” Award from Chambers Asia-Pacific in 2017 in recognition for his exceptional work in his field.

Highly sought after for his elite advocacy skills and knowledge of the law, Alvin has advised on some of the most high profile and complex matters. These include acting for the Republic of India in the first challenge against an investment treaty arbitration to be brought before the Singapore International Commercial Court involving the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement entered into between Japan and India; acting for a major global bank in defending a claim for US$280 million, the largest ever private banking suit in Singapore; defending an ICSID claim brought against the Independent State of Papua New Guinea for expropriation of the shares in a mining company with more than US$1.5 billion in assets; and acting for investors against the Kingdom of Lesotho's application to set aside an investment treaty award finding the State liable for denial of justice.

WongPartnership’s capabilities in arbitration and its deep bench of lawyers have won the Firm many international commendations, including this latest Benchmark Litigation’s “International Arbitration Firm of the Year” Award. One of the largest arbitration practices in the region, our 60-lawyer strong arbitration team has acted in some of the most significant arbitrations and court-related arbitration proceedings in the region, including in the investor-state arbitration disputes that have come before the Singapore Courts, numerous setting aside applications / appeals concerning disputes spanning across industry sectors and involving foreign parties and various complex infrastructure, energy and commercial arbitrations. Many of our lawyers also hold leadership positions in various key arbitral institutions and organisations around the world.

Said Alvin, “We are very pleased to be named the International Arbitration Firm of the Year and I am very proud of our arbitration lawyers. This award is testament to their expertise, commitment and excellence. I am also truly honoured to be named Singapore Lawyer of the Year and International Arbitration Lawyer of the Year from amongst such a distinguished field of nominees. I want to thank Euromoney Legal Media Group for the recognition and would like to share our awards with our clients, colleagues and friends, without whom this would not have been possible.”

Alvin serves as a member of the SIAC Court of Arbitration and the ICC Commission on Arbitration.
