Monica CHONG is a Partner in the Banking & Financial Disputes Practice.
Her main practice areas are banking, corporate and commercial disputes, professional negligence and complex commercial litigation.
Monica graduated from the University of Leicester and qualified as a barrister-at-law (Lincoln's Inn) in 1990. She completed training as a solicitor in London in a medium-sized city firm.
She is admitted to the Singapore Bar and to the Roll of Solicitors of England & Wales.
Matters of significance in which Monica has been involved in include the following:
- Acting for Bayerische Hypo - und Vereinsbank AG in legal proceedings against Asia Pacific Breweries (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. ("APBS") in relation to fraud committed by the brewery's finance manager on several banks for about S$120 million, the largest corporate fraud in Singapore's history. APBS is a subsidiary of Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd., which is listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange and the producers of Tiger Beer, Coopers & Lybrand, the auditors of Baring Futures (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. in relation to the collapse of the Barings Group, and in defending negligence claims commenced by the liquidators of Baring Futures (Singapore) Pte. Ltd., and by the liquidators of the ultimate English parent Barings plc in the Singapore and English Courts, for approximately £1 billion.
- Acting for PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consultants in an action against former senior employees for breach of employment contracts, conspiracy, unlawful interference with contracts and breaches of fiduciary duties.
- Acting for a law firm before the High Court and Court of Appeal in defending an action for professional negligence brought by their former client, involving issues as to the scope of the duty of care and on whether immunity for counsel under Rondel v Worsley principles applied in Singapore.
